Dear Prime Minister,

A Tamil man is being flown out of Sydney today. His claim for asylum was not processed properly. He has not been treated fairly or justly. Sri Lanka is not safe:

the use of torture, has been, and remains today, endemic and routine, for those arrested and detained on national security grounds
— UN Special Rapporteur Ben Emmerson

Australia's 'fast-track' process for determining refugee status is designed to make it difficult for refugees to be correctly assessed. In a well-resourced country like Australia, failure to carry out appropriate refugee processing is a deliberate abuse of human rights. Increasing numbers of Australians are horrified at how we treat people who seek asylum. It is urgent to reinstate proper refugee assessments including full legal assistance for the asylum seekers.
