Dear Prime Minister,
"There is an infinite scream inside of me, and I can’t hold it in any more."
These are the words of Omid Masoumali's widow, Pari.
Prime Minister, why is Pari in high security detention in Melbourne? Read her story in Ben Doherty's article. Doherty describes her situation as Kafkaesque. I think he is wrong. It is genuinely Australian. Our country is now a place where the concept of mercy has been replaced by its opposite. The more a person or a group have suffered the more suffering we seem to be compelled to inflict onto them. Is this how we define ourselves and defend ourselves? We choose the weakest targets and inflict the greatest pain, pain without end. I guess we colonials have been practising on Indigenous Australians long enough to have really got good at it.
