End offshore detention. #293

Dear Prime Minister,

We have observed and protested against the year-long campaign to make conditions even worse for detainees on Manus Island. Now documents from Transfield and Broadsprectum show that it has been the active intent of the camp managers and security staff to make Manus detention centre as inhospitable as possible.

There are plans for forced removals and warnings of 'catastrophic consequences' for having to use PNG police. Broadspectrum documents note that pushing the detainees out with no plan for their resettlement would 'be distressing' for them. But they go on to say 'if the detainees fail to comply (ie leave) the police will remove them either to their new compound [peaceful], to the MAA [resist] or jail [violent].'

Do not let this happen. The only possible outcome will be damage, violence, trauma and death. Close the camps and bring them here.

Food withheld on Manus

Dear Prime Minister,

Hold DIBP and Broad Spectrum to account! Detainees on Manus and Nauru must have access to food. A detainee on Manus Island wrote the following yesterday:

They made the mess like Australia central jail and long line for some fucking food!
3cm thick Glass
100 % like a jail mess!!
They made a wall between us and mess staffs and 4 windows in it
4 holes just Size of a plate
And they given food to us from those holes
When they put something for u in plate then they will give u in this small hole,
like u go to bank receiving cash in small hole, and all the area is covered; u can’t go in.
When i saw it i decided not to come again.
i always do dinner in mike compound*
This.mess [Oscar] is all covered by wood and thick glass now.
U have to point to food wht u want,
and if u say a bit more, they tell u “move on”,
in anger mode.
Food is short limit and also short time,
like they are giving the food only for a short time.
mam, you know lot of the people cooking in the room. And now they are giving us less food. And we need plates to eat inside the room.
But they are not allow us to have more plates.

Athena Nocua, who posted the above statement added:

This is in Oscar mess,
One of the two remaining in the manus RPC, where they serve truly awful food, off nasty plastic, maximum damage to planet and people ...
They just completely, deliberately MADE IT WORSE.
These changes have only been made in Oscar/Delta mess, where the men (mostly) with positive refugee status are housed.
In Mike/Fox mess, which has primarily men with negative immigration status, there have been no changes in the mess.
But the pressure to sign to return to their country of origin, or be deported, has been amped up.
The men are feeling angry, upset, insulted, frightened and/or HUNGRY.

Who initiated this? The detention, the vilification, the mistreatment, the lying and hubris must stop. Close the camps and bring them here. And be prepared to be held to account.

Letter from Nauru

Dear Prime Minister,

This letter was posted to Facebook from a detainee on Nauru:

I’m writing to you with lot of frustrations.
We have been here for more than three years and we some of the refugees work for Broadspectrum. The wages for refugees is very low. $4.70 per hour. We agreed to work with that rate but BrS has made another rule for refugee employees. Refugees who work for BrS have no access for income support which was given by ABF. We refugees are being used as slaves. We have no right of freedom and no right of employment. How can we survive in this way?
Why ABF is oppressing us in different ways?
Australian government are running offshore processing centres and using these two offshore processing centres as work place for Australian. We are roughly 1100 Asylum seekers and refugees but the employees from Australia are more than us. What’s the point of creating job opportunities for Australian by detaining refugees and asylum seekers indefinitely?
We are human beings and not animals. We have right to have family but Australian government has snatched our hopes and dignity. Please let us go somewhere else where we will be able to stay safely. please stop torturing us in the name processing.
Your government of Australia are pretending to be good government but in reality, not. How long do we have to keep suffering in order to have our basic rights?
We have come to Australia by boat but Article 31 of the Refugee Convention clearly states that refugees should not be penalised for arriving without valid travel documents.
Could you please share my message with your friends? Thanks.

Slavery as well as illegal detention?

Close the camps and bring them here.
