human shields

For the 134th man on Manus Island

Dear Prime Minister,

On behalf of the 134th refugee on Manus Island I protest the detention and torture of all asylum seekers by Australia, in Manus Island, Nauru and Christmas Island, and in the onshore centres such as Villawood.

Safdar Ahmed, an artist and academic, has illustrated the harrowing and repressive conditions at Villawood in "Villawood: Notes from an Immigration Detention Centre." Dr Ahmed won a Walkley award in 2015 for this zine.

End detention of asylum seekers and give them permanent refuge in Australia.

Letters to Tyranny #34

Dear Prime Minister,

On behalf of Mr XXX XXX, 34th man detained on Manus Island, please close the detention centres and bring the asylum seekers to Australia. As Jim Macken OA says in today's Guardian: "The Australian government is essentially treating refugees in these camps as human shields and this is utterly immoral." That is why Mr Macken has made the extraordinary offer to swap places with a refugee held in offshore detention and to relinquish his Australian citizenship if necessary.

What is your response to Mr Macken's offer and his request to you to "become the good leader you could be?"

Yours faithfully

Ruth Halbert
