View fullsize Its week 123 of our vigil for justice & safety for asylum seekers in Australia, PNG & Christmas Island. We have the privilege to stay safely at home, to have free access to soap & water and an excellent health service in our town. But the 100s of Medevacced asylum seekers are still locked up in overcrowded, unsanitary detention centres and re-purposed motels where it is impossible to observe social distancing and where security staff have no protective gear and do not wash their hands.
The Australian government’s own advisory says “people in detention facilities” are considered most at risk of serious infection of Covid-19.
At the same time, the Govt has excluded all non-citizens in the community from accessing the income support provided via Job Seeker & Job Keeper allowances. Refugees & others on temporary visas cannot get medical care unless they pay in full, have no income or rent assistance, yet are subject to all pandemic restrictions on gath

View fullsize Today would have been our 121st week of standing vigil for refugees in the centre of town. But with Covid19 continuing to spread we decided to #stayhome and share photos of our placards. Refugees are some of the most vulnerable to the virus. In Australia there are hundreds of sick refugees who were flown here from Manus & Nauru under the Medevac act, supposedly to get urgently needed medical attention. Unfortunately the act was drafted hastily & did not explicitly state that once in Aust the refugees must be given medical care. So most are still locked up in detention centres and cheap hotels here where they are shut indoors and not allowed to seek medical care. The men who are locked up in the Mantra hotel in Preston (Melbourne) report that the security staff who control every aspect of their lives are not following any of the recommended hygiene and social-distancing procedures to prevent infection by Covid19. The refugees have petitioned Minister Dutton to allow them to be r

View fullsize Almost all other news has been drowned out by Covid19 but we want to let refugees in Australia, PNG & Nauru know that we still speak up for your freedom, your health and your future.
@riserefugee is running a fundraising drive to try support the more than 3000 refugees that turn to them for legal support, food, etc and are in even greater need now. @caradwa gives support here in WA.
Please help these and other refugee support organisations where you can. However vulnerable we citizens feel now, the uncertainty is far worse for people whose status here is not secure.

View fullsize Several of the local businesses in town are run by former refugees (which is true of most towns and suburbs around Australia). Yesterday one of these generous souls made a point of coming over to us during the vigil to shake us each by the hand and wish us Happy Lunar New Year.
